It's not just much of Glasgow’s city centre that was built by the slave trade - the Southside shamefully benefited and profited from it too.

To help rebalance the picture, it's important to recognise the role the Southside played and the darker side of the local area’s history.

Find out about the transatlantic slave trade's links in the Southside and how local plantation merchants were involved in shaping local heritage.

We’ll cover some key people (both merchants and enslaved) and the connections with local historical sites.

Talk delivered by Saskia McCracken as part of our #SouthsideSlaveryLegacies project.

DATE & TIME:   Monday 9th August, 6pm-7pm
VENUE:  The Rum Shack, 657 Pollokshaws Rd, Glasgow G41 2AB
Booking not required but arriving early is advisable as numbers will be controlled by the venue in line with regulations.

This event is part of the 2021 Govanhill International Festival & Carnival's talks programme

**WEATHER DEPENDANT**

We’ll be doing a heritage walk around Queen’s Park on 8th March which will take one some of the elements of our new book (South Glasgow Heritage Trails). We’ll be meeting outside Langside Halls and will be giving a free guided walk around Queen’s Park.

We’ll be taking some muddy paths so boots are a must. The walk will take around 90 mins to an hour (but is informal and will vary depending on the pace so you can do less if you like) and we’ll talk about some of the heritage of the park and the area.

We won’t be doing the walk in bad weather so if you want to come along please ensure you check this events page for updates in advance and on the day for updates.

We’ll have a few books with us to sell and donations are welcome but not required.

We’re limited on numbers to ensure everyone can hear and ask questions so only those with tickets can join.

We will be doing more walks in future, to keep updated sign up to our mailing list http://eepurl.com/dp8fU9

Join us for our multicultural heritage focus groups & workshops this summer! South Glasgow Heritage and Environment Trust are developing an archive of the Southside, and we want to ensure that it is representative of the experiences of the whole community. The archive will be open and accessible to all, digitised where possible, and exhibited in local venues.

We'd like to consult local women and ethnic minority groups (no matter how long you've been here or how recently you've joined the community), to see what the Southside means to you, and what an accessible and representative archive on local heritage might look like. So come along for a chat and a cup of tea! If you are happy to bring an object, photo, or any material that makes you think of local memories, please bring it along and share your thoughts, local knowledge, and memories with us!

Likewise anyone who is happy for us to make copies of material for our archive, or even donate items (e.g. material from Milk’s open mic nights, sewing suppers, zine-making workshops, and Making Art Making Home projects), please do bring it along! We look forward to seeing you there!
