Sonic adventures in history, heritage and environment beckon as we’ve launched a podcast show on Glad Radio – the new community podcasting project for the Southside of Glasgow!

The #SouthsideChronicles show from SGHET will explore different stories in each eposide, including audio versions of some of our blogs read by their authors so you can tune into our bloggers’ Southside journeys directly through the spoken word.

We’ll also host interviews and other audio formats. Dive into the Glad Radio experience and browse the #SouthsideChronicles here.

Episode 5: Gorbals Public Art

Curator and SGHET board member Francesca Zappia interviews Matt Baker, lead artist for the art programme that accompanied the regeneration of Crown Street in the Gorbals in the 2000s. The artist speaks about the importance of public art in communities and recalls some of the various art projects he commissioned for the Gorbals, their backstories and their resonances.

This podcast follows on from Francesca’s earlier related blog post about one of the artworks: Decoding the Gorbals’ Girl With Rucksack statue.

Episode 4: Govan Reminiscence Group

Colin Quigley, Chair of the Govan Reminiscence Group, talks to Erin Burrows about the Group’s work, and shares an incredible story of the effort and pure luck involved in restoring Govan’s World War One Honour Roll. The changing perceptions of Govan after a decade of regeneration efforts and the rediscovery of its ancient heritage, the importance of local and community histories, and the lack of emphasis on and funding for Glasgow’s industrial heritage is also explored. A new activity-based project – ‘Remembering the Future’ – kicks off on Thursday 19th January offering a series of free, creative and exploratory workshops and other events for young residents of Govanhill and surrounding neighbourhoods.

The workshops will explore art as a way to come together, examine local histories, and share personal stories and cultural experiences.

Comprised of ten sessions especially tailored for young people (aged 10 to 21 years old) the project will take place at The Deep End Govanhill Baths Community Trust, 21 Nithsdale St, G41 2PZ every Thursday from 5pm-7pm, starting on Thursday 19th of January through to Thursday 23rd March.

During these free sessions, participants will get to try out and explore different artistic techniques and processes with the aim of creating an art collection to be exhibited and held within Govanhill Baths’ new building and its archive.

A unique opportunity for school pupils and upward to get hands-on in multiple ways with a local project, Remembering the Future will offer various activities through which to learn more about both the wider history of the area and Govanhill Baths itself, including printmaking, creative writing, pottery, drawing, photography, a guided walk and a museum visit.

At the end of the programme participants will be given the chance to share their work and experiences in an exhibition and event.

The collection will represent and reimagine Govanhill’s history with the aim of reclaiming and occupying its future, engaging with themes of belonging and cultural heritage.

Light refreshments will be available at each session alongside the workshops’ activities and conversations for everyone to enjoy.

Spaces will be limited for the sessions, on a first come first served basis, so early booking is advised.

About the project facilitators:

Paria Goodarzi and Francisco Llinas – both artists, researchers and social practitioners – are currently working with Govanhill Baths Trust as part of Creative Scotland’s Culture Collective residency programme. Govanhill Baths is a member of the national Culture Collective network and have a team of artists working with the local community and interpreting the theme of ‘Occupy!’.

Queen’s Park & Mary Queen of Scots Heritage Trail ~ Sunday 21st August (2-4pm) & Sunday 11th September (2-4pm)

Queen’s Park opened as a public park in September 1862… so September 2022 marks its 160th Birthday!

Originally called the South Side Park, it was Glasgow’s third public park, a place designed to allow people to escape the ‘carbonacious vapors’ that hung over the industrial city and breathe some clean air.

Yet the area that is now a much-loved recreational space has a much longer history, going back centuries. Join Bruce Downie and Harry Sittlington of South Glasgow Heritage and Environment Trust to explore the recent and not-so-recent history of the park named after Mary, Queen of Scots.

Cumbrae House doorcase in Laurieston, Glasgow

As part of Glasgow Doors Open Days festival 2022 join us to explore the Southside’s unsung Art Deco quarter.

As the ‘moderne’ style’s two-decade Centenary begins to take centre stage, find out how these buildings have contributed to the city’s past and present and how – post-pandemic and in a climate emergency as we rethink cities and the reuse of buildings – they could support Glasgow’s future…

Beacons of change from a tumultous period in Glaswegian and global history, can these last Art Deco buildings connecting the Gorbals and Tradeston act as catalysts for positive change in our modern city in flux?

From grit to glamour, and decline to rebirth, join us to unlock their secrets and superpowers.

South Seeds was set up 10 years ago to support local residents to lead more sustainable lives and in April 2021 we launched Glasgow’s Southside Tree Trail…

The trail is a circular route starting and finishing at the gates to Queen’s Park and leads trail followers through three Southside parks. The route introduces walkers and cyclists to 12 Southside trees, which are also common across Scotland. We suggest you set aside a good hour or two to enjoy the route.

South Seeds' Glasgow Southisde Tree Trail map
South Seeds’ Glasgow Southisde Tree Trail map

To embark on the tree trail, pick a leaflet up from South Seeds at 514 Victoria Road or check out and download the leaflet online.

The tree trail leaflet is packed full of information explaining how to identify the trees. There’s a clear map to follow and the locations of the trees are marked. It also features descriptions of the trees and an illustration of the leaf shape.

Identifying tree leaf and needle patterns information included in the tree trail leflet and app
Identifying tree leaf & needle patterns included in the trail

During the winter, when some trees lose their leaves, tree identification can be a bit tricky. For this reason, we’ve included ‘What three words’ for each tree. Using the three unique words and the What Three Words app you will be able to easily locate each tree.

Spotting & identifying historic and everyday trees

The route introduces walkers to some outstanding southside tree planting. This includes the tree-lined Queen’s Drive, the ancient yew trees in Queen’s Park, the cheerful Rowan trees of East Pollokshields and the magnificent Ash trees In Govanhill Park.

Pollokshaws Road tree not featured in the tree trail: can you identify it?
Pollokshaws Rd tree not featured in the tree trail: can you identify the species?

Once you have walked the trail and located the tress you can keep an eye on those trees throughout the year and notice how they change throughout the seasons.

Learning how to identify trees at any point in the year is a valuable skill. The next time you’re out and about in town or the countryside, you’ll be able to tell the different between a Beech and a Birch tree.

South Seeds’ urban croft for the community

The tree trail route takes walkers past the entrance to the Croft on Queen’s Park recreation ground. Through the chain link fence passers-by can see the community garden where residents are invited to adopt-a-raised bed each March. There are 24 raised beds to be adopted and they are allocated to those that apply in March each year.

There’s a programme of support for the growers delivered by South Seeds’ expert gardener Eric. Growers adopt the beds until November, when they will have harvested all their produce. South Seeds looks after the beds over the winter to nourish the soil and conduct any maintenance in time for the next round of adoptions.

Southside Tool Library & home energy advice

South Seeds has an office on Victoria Road, open 9am–5pm on week days and 10am–2pm on Saturdays. From it South Seeds also runs the Southside Tool Library where you can borrow tools. In turn, we have energy officers who can help people reduce their energy bills.

If you’re interested in any of our projects or services, mitigating climate change, saving the environment or becoming more sustainable drop in to our Victoria Road unit!

Share ideas Sat 21st Aug at Queen’s Park Recreation Ground Croft!

South Seeds is holding its open AGM at the Croft, our beautiful community garden on Queen’s Park recreation ground. We’re keen for locals to help us shape the next 10 years, so please do come along and share your ideas. The AGM is on Saturday 21 August 2021, it starts at 10.30am and will finish by 11.30am.

Pollok Park Heritage Trail Podcast

Ownership of Pollok Park and surrounding areas can be dated back to 1124, but the history of the lands can be traced back to prehistoric times with a burial mound in Pollok Golf course and an Iron age fort in the North Wood. From the grandeur of Pollok House to the long-forgotten, hidden tree-lined drive, together we’ll walk some of the 361 acres of historical parkland of Glasgow’s only country park.

As well as the heritage of the house and the lands you’ll learn about a long-forgotten town, witch trials, castles, escapee cows, iron-age forts, prehistoric burial mounds, mouse breeding and why the Pope’s approval was needed…  ( ~ listen here ~)

Govanhill Heritage Trail Podcast

Govanhill was at one time the beating heart of Industrial Glasgow; the iron and steel produced here, the ships and trains built here, fuelled a revolution and helped forge a city and an empire. The industrial days have long gone but Govanhill remains one of the most vibrant and diverse communities in Glasgow.

On this guided walk, find out a little about the history, heritage and culture of a remarkable community and some of the people from around the world who have made their home here, the miners, the iron workers and the shipbuilders, the rifle regiment that became a football team, cinemas and roller-skating rinks, churches, mosques, synagogues, circuses and swimming pools… ( ~ listen here ~)
