Talk: Taps aff? What happened after the 1988 Glasgow Garden Festival

Join us at 6.50pm on Thursday 27th April at The Deep End on Nithsdale St for the second of our 2023 #SouthGlasgowHeritageNights events – an illustrated talk from the After The Garden Festival team, followed by Q&A.

Places are limited – BOOK HERE

The 1988 Garden Festival changed how the world saw Glasgow, and how it saw itself. It lives on only in people’s memories as the buildings, objects and artworks from this temporary event are gone forever – or are they?

Join Urban Prehistorian Kenny Brophy, Project Maestro Lex Lamb, and Holder of the Official Garden Festival Umbrella Gordon Barr to learn how they have used crowdsourcing to build an ever growing digital record of the hundreds of pavilions, sculptures and attractions that made up the Festival.

“Items and memories are scattered across the globe with stories to tell: from the large (the Coca-cola Roller Coaster, now in Suffolk), to the small (a Garden Festival tea-towel, now in Papua New Guinea); we’ve identified surviving artefacts, ephemera and even some of the original plants and gardens that delighted visitors over that unforgettable summer, more than thirty years ago.

We’ll outline what we’ve learned so far about how the 1988 Festival was put together, taken apart and spread around the world, with the help of hundreds of individual submissions and leads, with plenty hidden in plain sight closer to home – and we’re learning more every day!

But we still haven’t found the giant tap, sorry.”

We had a phenomenal demand for our Queen’s Park family activity trail in June and all printed copies were gone within a week! We’ve decided to add them as a free download for anyone signing up for our mailing list. You’ll get a free PDF to print out which you can take out into the park with you. Also ideal for schools and community groups…

Once printed out, these leaflets will take you on a guided trail around the park where you can learn snippets of info on its history and heritage. You can answer some questions, fill-in your own map, and design a flag!

We’d love you to share your drawings either by posting your leaflets in the postboxes sited at the various park gates at end of your walk, or by emailing photos of them to info@sghet.com – that way we can add them to our community archive.

If you got one of the fold-out print copies back in June, you can still share those completed maps for our archive too, again either in the postboxes, or by sharing snaps of them with us on Facebook or Twitter. Photos of the completed print out versions can also be sent to us at the same email address as above…

We decided to undertake this project after COVID-19 halted most of our planned projects so we altered our plans and created a lockdown activity that could be done safely in Queen’s Park. It’s aimed at families – and schools – but don’t let that stop anyone being creative, adults can play too!

Click here for your free Activity download

Hope you have fun with them!

As the lockdown response to COVID-19 continues and evolves, South Glasgow Heritage & Environment Trust (SGHET) is seeking to build a picture of the resilience of local life as our diverse community adapts locally to the global pandemic – with your input.

To piece together the new experiences, habits and feelings of the moment, we invite residents of South Glasgow to share photos from everyday life – images captured by you that reflect how it is being re-shaped and our moods and activities are changing in this new situation.

The new rhythms of life under lockdown…

How are you making the new norms of social distancing, social isolation, working/studying/schooling from home (and other new realities) manageable… what’s keeping you afloat, giving you hope, helping you cope and get through this?

What do you appreciate about your local area now that you spend most or all of your time in it… have your feelings changed about it?

Examples of things to share

Indoors: what activities are helping you or your family pass the time? What’s comforting or inspiring you and making lockdown bearable?

For example: art & drawing, games, decorating, cooking, family hairdressing, gardening, revisiting old stuff, exploring family history or heirlooms, mending things, making or getting into new things…

Outdoors: what do you see on your essential trips outside that strikes you or lifts your mood? What are you noticing?

For example: nature, parks, buildings, street scenes, new routes, pets on their walk, sunsets, skylines, chalked messages & games, posters, acts of kindness, community support projects, open & closed shops, cafes or pubs, traffic-free roads, other details large or small that catch your eye…

How to contribute…

• Share your photos (and any remarks you want to make about them) with us on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter using the hashtags #SouthGlasgowLockdown or #SouthsideLockdownLens – or just post them to our timelines or by tagging us if that’s easier.

• You can also email us your images direct to info@sghet.com with a short description or anything you want to say about them.

• Got any questions? You can ask questions about or comment on the project on social media or by email.

We look forward to seeing your photos and getting a flavour of how the Southside is keeping on, staying safe, finding hope and sustaining itself through this new COVID-19 era.

Ultimately we plan to create a community archive of this project, to document this period for the future. Join us in taking the first step!

Note: We appreciate and respect that this is a troubling time for many, and some may not feel like contributing or be able to. If you’d rather just keep in touch, you can find us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram or sign up for our email newsletter.

Below are some photos from the SGHET team… we look forward to seeing yours.
